The Wishing Well- Jamaica

This was my first project for BFA and it was a lot of fun, even though it was really, really hard lol The story we were basically given is that the is a wishing well, there is a creature who lives inside the well, and there is a character (a young boy or girl) who discovers the well. The fun part was that they made all of us pick a country out of a hat to base it in. I pulled Jamaica and this is what I came up with:

Teegan is an 11 year old girl who lives with her father in present day Jamaica. Her father runs a tour boat that also doubles as an oyster bar. Teegan often helps her dad fish for, and collect oysters along the Black River. Her mother was murdered when she was about 9 (Jamaica has a really high murder rate), and the beads she wears around her neck once belonged to her mother. As a result of her mother's murder, Teegan has become somewhat withdrawn and shy, but she also has a very kind heart, a warm spirit, and is resourceful. Teegan loves insects and bugs, and she would collect them except for the fact that she does not want to kill them, because her mother was killed. So instead, she carries her camera with her wherever she goes to take pictures of insects which she then cuts out and tapes into a book so it looks like a bug collection.

One day while collecting oysters with her dad, Teegan spots a butterfly she has yet to capture the perfect picture of. So she follows it deeper and deeper into a Mangrove forest  and eventually discovers the wishing well, which is made out of the roots of a giant Mangrove tree. She then meets Anansi, my creature, who is based off of the West African myth of Anansi the trickster spider. Anansi is somewhat selfish and greedy, so when he sees Teegan's bug book, he instantly wants it. So he promises to grant her a wish if she gives him her book. Teegan is reluctant at first but wants to see her mom again, so she gives Anansi her book in exchange for this. However, Anansi has tricked her and her mother never comes, so Teegan then must figure out a way to outsmart a trickster.

I still have to go back and make revisions to everything before May, but this is what I have for now.

The Transformation of Nutmeg

I did this as a sketch last Fall when I designed Nutmeg, but finally had a chance to color it last semester. Forgot I did it XD

Advanced VisDev Final: The Looking Glass Wars

So this was the final I did for VisDev this semester. We were given the choice of a few sci fi authors and we could pick any story we wanted by them to design characters and environments for. I decided to ask the teacher if I could design for one of my all time favorite books: The Looking Glass Wars by Frank Beddor. I think they are making a movie out of it soon, which I'm excited for, but I wanted to do some designs for it before the movie comes out.

The Looking Glass Wars tells the "true story" of Alice in Wonderland. Wonderland is ruled by imagination, to which there is a light and a dark side. Princess Alyss of Wonderland has a powerful imagination. Her mother is Queen of wonderland. One day, Alyss' evil Aunt Redd kills her parents to take over Wonderland. Alyss' bodyguard Hatter Madigan rescues her and escapes with her to the Pool of Tears, which transports her to England, and Hatter to Paris. They end up being separated for 13 years. Alyss grows up being told that Wonderland never existed and that she made it up in her head. She eventually meets Lewis Carroll and asks him to write a book about Wonderland so she can prove to everyone she was telling the truth. But Carroll writes her story wrong, and that's how Alice in Wonderland came to be as we know it today.

Anyways, here are my designs. I did a lot of characters because I love doing them the most. I also saw it as a serious 2D type of animated thing, so designed with that in mind.
